We had the pleasure of working with Ingrid Pastorius at Kids Talk Radio and Super School University. Our mission was to find creative ways of keeping jazz alive in the schools. This interview was the start of a program to record the history of the great musician that help to shape American Jazz. Ingrid was just perfect for this job. She was a school teacher, married to Jaco Pastorius and had the honor to go on the road with the great jazz group “Weather Report.”

Ingrid was very positive and a great person to work I had plans to come back with a third interview and capture her story about Nora Jones and Joni Mitchell. I called her cell phone and left a message last week and did not hear from her. She is great at returning calls. This interview helps me to remember her kind voice.

This interview has three parts. Parts one and two are about Ingrids life on the road all special memories. Part three is our Cape Verdean Jazz Morna that we have dedicated to the memory of Ingrid. This jazz morna has a very special meaning to me in 2011. In this same year, we lost Cesara Evora a popular Cape Verdean singer and wonderful person that brought Cape Verdean Mornas to the attention of the world.

Please share your comments and stories.

Bob Barboza

We asked Ingrid to help us with our special project of keeping jazz alive in the schools. Ingrid agreed and you will find mention on her LinkedIn page. We started out on a journey interviewing different members of the music community and it was important that we interview Ingrid. This may be the only interview of Ingrid in her own voice. If there are more please let us know. There is something special about hearing Ingrid speak. You can get a sense about what a wonderful person she was. I loved talking with Ingrid over the phone. She was a walking jazz history book and the perfect person to lead Jr. Music School at Super School University. Ingrid helped with editing for Kids Talk Radio and strategic planning for helping to keep jazz alive in the schools. On about December 20, 2011, I called Ingrid and left a message on her cell phone. I had no idea that she had died. My plan was to invite her to California to be the narrator in a visual jazz opera. She was to speak over our Cabo Verde Jazz Morna and other songs written to go along with a special art collection. It was to be spoken word in a jazz opera. I wanted to call Ingrid last. It turns out that I waited too long.

About the Jazz Morna

I first learned about traditional mornas from the music of Ceasari Evora.

Ms. Évora’s music was in a style called morna, which is sung in taverns on the Cape Verde islands: slow, pensive ballads with an underlying lilt, suffused with sodade, the Cape Verdean creole term for a nostalgic longing that pervades music across Portugal (where the word is saudade) and its former empire.

I thought of this music like Cape Verde Blues. All of my influences were in American Jazz so I thought I would try and compose a “Jazz Mora”.

Cesária Évora, who brought the music of the tiny Cape Verde islands off Senegal to a worldwide audience, died on Saturday, December 18, 2011, in Mindelo, on São Vicente, her native island in Cape Verde. She was 70. In keeping with our project of making sure that music alive in the school. Before the age of 20 when I arrived in CA, I had also lived in the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Antilles, and Puerto Rico. My father was a musician turned engineer, my brother Paul, a musician in San Diego, also teaches Math, my brother Peter is a linguist, teacher and poet. In 1979 I married Jaco Pastorius, who had revolutionized the bass guitar and become an impressive composer by the time he was 25. Our twins, Julius and Felix Pastorius, born June ’82, are now both musicians. Their father was murdered in ’87. While raising our sons I developed a passion for teaching and finding a way to bring awareness to kids and parents the importance of gaining confidence, self-worth and knowledge through the appreciation of Jazz, “America’s Classical Music”.

*******************************************************************

We welcome your stories

Bob Barboza
Kids Talk Radio
Suprschool@aol.com
http://www.KidsTalkRadioUSA.com
http://www.KidsTalkRadioLA.com

December 24, 2011
<itunes:summary>Kids Talk Radio and Super School University will never forget Ingrid Pastorius.I interviewed Ingrid for both Super School University and Kids Talk Radio. About the Jazz MornaI first learned about traditional mornas from the music of Ceasari Evora.Ms. Évora’s music was in a style called morna, which is sung in taverns on the Cape Verde islands: slow, pensive ballads with an underlying lilt, suffused with sodade, the Cape Verdean creole term for a nostalgic longing that pervades music across Portugal (where the word is saudade) and its former empire.I thought of this music like Cape Verde Blues.
